Antimachia
The Venetian castle and the windmills
Windmills
Antimachia is a traditional village that is famous for the musical and dancing tradition. Old working windmills remain the symbol of Antimachia and can be seen from every part of the village. In the village you’ll see Milos tou Papa, which translates to mill of the priest & is a traditional windmill that’s been well restored and looked after. Apart from windmills the Venetian Castle of Antimachia dominates the village and offers a magnificent view over the island of Kos.

Traditional House
The house is a recreation of the islands traditional houses from the early 20th century.
It’s made entirely of stone and consists of a single story building with a walled courtyard that’s filled with beautiful potted plants.
The house is laid out and decorated with traditional materials and has musical instruments, a sewing machine and manikins dressed in traditional clothes amongst other items dating back to the period. Attached to the artefacts are cards explaining what you’re looking at and how it would have been used at the time.

The castle
The medieval castle lies on a small hill above Antimachia village, to the south of Kos and was built in the early 14th century by the Order of the Knights of Saint John. However according to the inscription above the main gate, works were intensified at the end of the 15th century, particularly in 1494 .
Inside the Castle, there are not many things to see apart from two Venetian churches, the church of Aghios Nikolaos dating from the 16th century and the church of Aghia Paraskevi, built in early 18th century. Some remains of cisterns and houses survive but not in a very good state, as you can see only their foundations.
A walk to the Castle wil pay you back with the nice views of the surrounding area and the sea.
Note: The visit to the castle is not a part of our island tour excursion.
