Tradition & Festivals

Mandraki is famous for its festivals, the most important of which is the 15th of August celebrated by Panagia Spiliani and in Panagia Kyra, as well as on 23/8, in the Nine Days of Panagia. The feast of the 15th of August is accompanied by a two-day event and a famous festival, where the custom of the "cup" and the revithada in the village square stand out. During the festivals, the inhabitants who love dance and song, wear their traditional costumes. Festivals are very important cultural elements for the island and for this reason they are held in public buildings.

The history of the land

Nisyros flourished during the 5 century BC while it was captured from the Persians and freed from the Athenians, becoming a member of the Delian League. Thereafter, the island was conquered from the Macedonians and the Roman Empire, followed from great prosperity during the Roman and Byzantine period. Nisyros suffered from a series ofpirate invasions until it passed to the Knights of Saint John who built five fortresses in the strategic areas of the island, followed from a massive volcanic eruption which led to thecreate of the crater in the middle of the island. Nisyros was reunited with Greece in March of 1948, after the Italian and Turkish occupation and the end of the Second World War
